What is the Hydraulic Release Shackle?

The Hydraulic Release Shackles (HRS) are used for lifting and positioning structures that are either subsea or on the surface. HRS is mostly used in areas with limited access, where it is difficult for direct human interaction, in order to safely fasten or release shackles connections. These are used to install and decommission on-/offshore structures by allowing the remote release and engagement of lift rigging from structures being raised. Over the past 30 years, our shackles have been used on projects all over the world and have an extensive track record.

IQIP’s standard range of release shackles have hydraulic umbilical connectivity. They can also be customised to include ROV-friendly solutions with the capacity to store hydraulic energy during subsea operations. All our equipment has been designed with contingency and functionality in mind, which ensures that you are able to safely release any load.

How does it work?

The Hydraulic Release Shackle fastens and releases the shackle automatically with a hydraulically operated pin. Hydraulic Release Shackles can be remotely operated via a Hydraulic power pack or by ROV intervention, making the shackle operation a safer process. Besides, the hydraulic pin can be operated faster than conventional handling, which increases the efficiency in shackle fastening. HRS is suitable up to 3,000 meter water depth and has several methods available to improve operational capability, which are:

  • Hot Stab for easy ROV interaction as primary of back-up connection
  • Secondary back-up cylinders
  • Accumulators for stored hydraulic energy
  • Mechanical back-up release to allow for back-up release activations if required

Why is this tool suitable for your project?

Our Hydraulic Release Shackles have been a part of our fleet since 1998. To this date, we have sold over 500 shackles in ranges from 17.5 to 2,000 tonnes, suitable for water depths of 500 to 3,000 meters, of which around 200 of those units were ROV capable versions. In the rental part of the business, we have been involved in over 100 projects onshore and offshore with over 2,300 rental days achieved.

These are the primary advantages of the tool:

  • Compact design
  • Modular design: manometer, hot stab accumulator, ROV ball valve
  • ROV-friendly
  • Independent of shackle brands
  • Possible to modify existing shackles
