What is an offshore lifting tool?

The Internal Lifting Tool (ILT) is a fail safe offshore lifting tool used for the lifting and upending of subsea structures, piles, and topside equipment in challenging marine environments. During the operations, the tool will be placed inside the pile or structure. When the tool is lifted, the lifting contact teeth around the gripping circumference expand and make contact with the pile inner wall which results in a fail safe and quick lift.

The failsafe system allows for the gripping force onto the lifted structure to be maintained as the load is lifted and thereby preventing the release of the tool if it is under load. The connection and disconnection of the Internal Lifting Tool can be handled remotely. In this way, you will reduce human interaction and increase the safety of the operation.

As a pile lifting tool it is used across the offshore wind, oil & gas, and decommissioning markets, from large-diameter monopiles to pin piles, conductors, and topside modules. Lifting capacities up to 2,000 tonnes make it a heavy lifting tool for the largest offshore components.

Proven offshore lifting equipment across multiple markets

Over the past 40+ years IQIP developed specialised Internal Lifting Tools. We have developed multiple ILTs, each with their own requirements (jacket and pin pile installation, ultra deep water, decommissioning), however always based on our fail safe principle. However always based on our fail safe principle.

Every ILT is a fail safe lifting tool by design. Mechanical load applied on the tool in longitudinal direction results in a transversal force on the pile, which creates the locking connection. As a subsea lifting tool the connection can also be operated remotely by ROV, which keeps people out of the lift.

Below you will find some information about our Internal Lifting Tools. All the Internal Lifting Tools are certified and designed according Lloyd’s Lifting Appliances and are available for rent or purchase.

Pile lifting tool specifications: range, capacity and water depth

The Internal Lifting Tools have a high capacity and are equipped with accumulators to overcome the use of hoses. The same pile lifting tool platform covers pin piles for jacket foundations as well as large-diameter piles. Our Internal Lifting Tools are available for rent or purchase.

Decommissioning lifting tool for offshore platform removal

IQIP designed the Decommissioning Internal Lifting Tools specifically for the Decommissioning market. In this market, we see that the structures that need decommissioning require larger capacities , due to extra material added during its operational life and the unknown weight additions due to environmental factors. IQIP can provide you with an Finite Element Analysis to find the most suitable Internal Lifting Tool for your project. Need an ILT for decommissioning projects? Then the Decommissioning Internal Lifting Tool is what you need.

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Standard pile range 20” – 96”
  • Lifting capacities of 200t – 2,000t
  • Varying models that accommodate size ranges

Fail safe lifting system: How our offshore lifting equipment works

All of our Internal Lifting Tools are equipped with IQIP’s innovative fail safe principle:

Mechanical load applied on the tool in longitudinal direction results in a transversal force on the pile which creates the ‘locking / fail safe’ connection. This allows for a connection to be maintained and cannot be released until the lift operation is complete. Resulting in safe operations during all circumstances.

  • Extremely reliable and safe
  • Available for rent or purchase
  • Shortens upending / operation time compared to shackles

Frequently asked questions

What is an Internal Lifting Tool (ILT)?

The IQIP Internal Lifting Tool (ILT) is a fail-safe lifting system designed for the lifting, upending, installation, and retrieval of (pin) piles, subsea structures, conductors, and topside equipment. The tool is inserted inside the structure and hydraulically expands gripping teeth against the inner wall, creating a secure lifting connection. This eliminates the need for conventional external lifting arrangements like slings or shackles and improves both operational efficiency and safety.

The ILT uses an innovative fail-safe wedge gripping mechanism. As lifting load is applied, the gripping teeth engage the inside wall of the pile or structure. The higher the load, the stronger the gripping force becomes. This means the tool cannot be unintentionally released while under load, significantly reducing lifting risks during offshore operations.

Compared with conventional lifting slings and shackles, the IQIP Internal Lifting Tool offers several advantages:

  • Reduced personnel exposure during lifting operations.
  • Remote connection and disconnection capabilities.
  • Faster installation and lifting sequences.
  • Secure fail-safe lifting connection.
  • Reduced deck congestion and rigging complexity.
  • Suitable for challenging offshore environments and deep-water operations.

These benefits contribute to improved project safety, reduced installation time, and lower overall operational costs.

IQIP offers a range of Internal Lifting Tools suitable for various project requirements. Standard systems can accommodate pile diameters ranging from 16″ to 96″ and lifting capacities between 200 and well beyond 2,000 tonnes. Standard operating water depth is up to 500 metres, while specialized Deep Water Internal Lifting Tools are available for operations in water depths of up to 2,500 metres. It can also be customized for removal or decommissioning activities.

Yes. IQIP offers Internal Lifting Tools both for rental and purchase. Our engineering specialists can support customers with feasibility studies, lifting analyses, interface design, and tool selection to ensure the most suitable ILT configuration for the project. All tools are certified and designed in accordance with recognised lifting appliance standards, providing confidence in both safety and performance. IQIP is uniquely qualified to calculate safe use during operation.

The Internal Lifting Tool has an established track record in offshore wind, offshore oil & gas, and decommissioning projects. It is commonly used for lifting (pin) piles, conductors, jackets, subsea structures, and topside modules where safety, reliability, and operational efficiency are critical. IQIP also offers products for lifting of monopiles.
