Successful completion of secondary steel mock-up trials

News published on March 31, 2026

Cadeler has successfully completed the mock‑up trials for the secondary steel installation and commissioning activities at the Port of Tyne in the north‑east of England. Supported by IQIP and several project partners, the trials mark an important milestone ahead of offshore construction at Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm.

With the completion of these tests, all components and equipment designed and built over the past year have been validated to perform exactly as intended. This ensures a safe and efficient start to offshore installation later this year.

IQIP equipment developed for Hornsea 3

As part of its full‑scope involvement, IQIP designed, manufactured, tested and delivered several dedicated secondary steel installation tools, including:

  • Secondary Steel Installation Tool (SSIT) for installing the Suspended Internal Platform, Boat Landing and External Ladder.
  • External Concrete Platform Installation Tool (ECPIT) for accurate and controlled installation of the External Concrete Platform.
  • Anode Cage Installation Tool (ACIT) for safe and efficient placement of the anode cage.
  • Storage towers engineered specifically for storing secondary steel components on board Cadeler’s Wind Orca.
  • Storage Tower Lifting Tool with COG compensation system to support quick and easy handling of the loaded and unloaded storage towers.
  • 800t Combi Lifting Tool with rotation frame, enabling fast, safe and precise lifting operations for all the above equipment without manual interference.

Once offshore installation commences, IQIP will continue its involvement by deploying service technicians offshore to operate the tools, ensuring reliable performance throughout the execution phase.

Why IQIP has been chosen

IQIP was selected thanks to its early involvement in the project, enabling a detailed understanding of all technical and operational requirements from the very start. By taking full responsibility across the entire scope — from design and manufacturing to testing, delivery, operation and maintenance — IQIP ensured a seamless, integrated approach.

IQIP extends its specific thanks to Cadeler for its continued trust and collaboration throughout the development and testing phases. We also recognise the dedication of IQIP’s project team and our subcontractors and partners, whose expertise and commitment were essential to achieving successful delivery.
