What is PULSE?

Add-on to the standard hammer

PULSE® is an innovative add-on to the Hydrohammer®, designed to enhance noise mitigation during offshore monopile installations. It consists of two pistons in a housing with a column of fluid in between. This fluid-filled volume allows PULSE to control impact characteristics, reducing noise at the source and protecting marine life.

PULSE® addon hydrohammer

Mitigate noise smarter with PULSE

PULSE is a dampening system (add-on) positioned between a hydraulic hammer (Hydrohammer) and its anvil. It reduces noise significantly at source, supporting environmentally-friendly installation. PULSE was nominated for an Offshore Energy Award 2019 in the ‘Best innovation’ category.

Why PULSE?

Energy efficient and adaptable

Due to its positioning, PULSE can easily be combined with other underwater noise mitigating measures. One such is IQIP’s Integrated Monopile Installer, which directly mitigates noise by shielding the pile with a double-walled steel tube into which a bubble curtain can be fed. In most cases, the combination of those two systems would eliminate the need for a Big Bubble Curtain (BBC).

Secure installation

The liquid between the pistons can be filled or drained almost instantly. A PULSE system with maximum fluid (100%) between the pistons delivers optimal noise reduction. This volume can be adjusted steplessly down to PULSE 0%, corresponding to a conventional Hydrohammer. The ability to change stiffness instantly and continuously is key, eliminating the need for safety margins required by pre-set systems. PULSE ensures maximum noise reduction and optimal drivability, regardless of pile type, location, or soil conditions.

PULSE® IQIP

Recent developments around PULSE

To date, the IQIP PULSE system has been successfully deployed in multiple offshore wind projects, including over 200 jacket pin piles and more than 200 monopiles.

IQIP is developing PULSE for all hammer sizes in Offshore Wind, Oil & Gas and Coastal & Civil markets. Modelling and results of applications are available for optional combination of PULSE and other mitigation techniques tailored for specific project conditions.
