Cutting offshore CO₂ emissions with EQ Piling technology

News published on August 25, 2026

Offshore monopile installation has always been accompanied by noise — but with noise comes emissions. Traditional offshore piling projects often rely on (enhanced) double Big Bubble Curtains (e/dBBCs) — large acoustic abatement systems designed to protect marine life. Effective, yes — but also highly energy intensive.

Operating e/dBBCs requires dedicated vessels equipped with multiple compressors (often more than 30 per vessel), continuous high energy air compression, extensive hose systems that need to be deployed and retrieved, and substantial offshore logistics with corresponding fuel use and personnel. All of which add up to substantial CO₂ emissions and costs.

Because EQ-Piling reduces underwater noise at the source below the regulatory limits, bubble curtains aren’t required at all.

  • No additional vessels with compressors
  • No bubble curtain hose installation
  • No high‑pressure air systems burning fuel
  • No additional vessel time, transit, or standby periods

Every avoided support vessel — especially those carrying dozens of compressors — directly translates into lower fuel consumption and therefore a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions at project level.

A cleaner pathway for offshore wind development
By eliminating the need for additional noise abatement measures, EQ-Piling enables a fundamentally cleaner installation philosophy. Fewer assets are required offshore, resulting in lower operational emissions and measurable ESG benefits through significant reductions in project-related CO₂ emissions. The overall environmental impact of each project is reduced.

With the completion of the first full -scale offshore monopile installation just recently, IQIP has achieved TRL 9 for its EQ-Piling technology, confirming its readiness for future deployment. The technology offers developers, governments, and contractors a low-noise, low-CO₂, and scalable alternative to traditional piling.
