IQIP’s innovative noise mitigation solution, PULSE®, on route to Arcadis Ost 1

NEWS PUBLISHED 13 MAY 2022

IQIP’s S-4000 Hydrohammer with PULSE, Flange Pile Upending Tool and a Receptacle for a Combi Lifting Tool 3000t have been loaded out from IQIP’s yard in Sliedrecht and are on their way to Arcadis Ost 1 to contribute to the foundation installation of the wind farm.

Arcadis Ost 1 is a 257 MW offshore wind farm located in the Baltic Sea, and is one of the first projects to use ten-metre diameter monopiles, making it home to some of the world’s largest wind turbines. IQIP is supporting the contractor, DEME, and project developer, Parkwind Ost, with the installation of the foundations for Arcadis Ost 1.

Larger wind turbines generate more renewable energy, but during installation of monopiles at sea, the noise generated by high energy pilling may be harmful to the marine environment. State-of-the-art construction methods are required to minimise the impact of noise from pile driving activities on marine life. For this reason, IQIP’s innovative noise mitigation solution, PULSE, will be used as an add-on to the S-4000 Hydrohammer, along with a newly designed pile guide sleeve to accommodate secondary steel at the monopile. PULSE will tackle underwater noise at the source, and will be used in addition to other mitigation techniques on the project to reduce the environmental impact of the pile driving. The elongated blow of PULSE – two times the duration of the blow of a conventional hammer – results in significant noise reductions, and the fatigue in the pile is also reduced by up to 60 percent, making it possible to install more complex monopiles without damaging secondary steel.

About PULSE

PULSE is a modular add-on to the standard IQIP Hydrohammer. The unit is positioned between the pile driving hammer and sleeve, and dampens the impact and noise with two steel plungers. The volume in between the plungers can be filled with water, which extends the impact of each blow of the Hydrohammer, resulting in reduced noise levels. The main advantage of PULSE is that it uses an adaptable volume of water as a cushion between two pistons, which helps to deliver a softer blow with a longer duration to the pile. This causes less vibrations in the water and soil. Although it’s still under development and this is its first commercial use, IQIP is confident that PULSE will make a significant contribution to current noise mitigation practices.
